Holiday Grief

Updated: Nov 26, 2018

Typically, during this season many people grieve more than normal. This is mainly because there are an extreme amount of deaths that occur during the holiday season and because the holidays bring so many memories. Even for family members who did not die during the holiday season we tend to remember them and grieve even more. Holidays are supposed to be a time of cheer and giving. Families’ normally like to maintain a state of happiness and calmness but for those who just cannot seem to cope during this season I have compiled a list of immediate grief resources available for families’ in need along with 5 ways to celebrate your loved ones life during this season.

Grief resources for adults:

The Centering Corporation

Grief Watch

Widows Wear Stilettos

Child Grief Resources:

Child Grief Education Association

The Compassionate Friends

The Center for Grieving Children, Teens and Families

If you are not sure you’re grieving please read the Stages of Grief below. These stages do not appear in any specific order but if you are experiencing these stages all at once you may need one of the resources above.

Denial

Bargaining

Acceptance

Depression

Anger

How to celebrate your loved ones life during this holiday season:

Ornaments – Christmas tree ornaments with your loved ones image can be a great way to celebrate their lives.

Pictures – Pictures near the dinner table can help everyone in the family remember that someone is missing from the table. This will also make the entire family grateful that that person was once alive.

Presents – Placing an item under the tree that once belong to your loved one may be a nice surprise for everyone.

Songs – Singing lifts every ones spirits.

Prayer – Meditating and praying will always change things and help you implement the all of the above.

The holidays can be happy in spite of any circumstance!
